RUM DRINK RECIPES

         
Rum is a distilled beverage made from sugar cane by products such as molasses and sugar cane juice by a process of fermentation and distillation. The distillate, a clear liquid, is then usually aged in oak and other barrels for 1 to 10 years, then bottled at anywhere from 80 to 151 proof. The majority of the world's rum production occurs in and around the Caribbean and in several South American countries.
Rum was first distilled on the sugarcane plantations of the Caribbean in the 17th century. Colonial North America first produced Rum in 1664 on what is now Staten Island. Rum became early Colonial New England's largest and most profitable industry.
Rum played an important role in early American politics and elections, the slave trade, and the Royal Navy. British Sailors received rum rations from the 18th century until the 1970's.
